BIRMINGHAM: Chris Rogers has returned to the training nets with an Australian team forced indoors by miserable weather ahead of the third Ashes Test and appeared untroubled by the ear and balance problems that came to light when he suffered a dizzy spell while batting at Lord's a week ago.

The opener trained for nearly an hour at the indoor centre at Edgbaston on Sunday, watched closely by team doctor Peter Brukner, physio Alex Kountouris and head coach Darren Lehmann.

He is yet to face the Australian fast bowlers, who also resumed their preparations in an adjacent net after a break between Tests in London, but was put through a rigorous session.

Rogers received throwdowns from Lehmann, including a few short balls, as well as deliveries from spinner Nathan Lyon before having tennis balls thrown at him by team analyst Dene Hills. He was then monitored closely by Brukner and Kountouris as he engaged in some match simulation by running threes between the wickets. His session wound up with a fielding drill with Hills.

The 37-year-old has been considered an outsider to be cleared to play at Edgbaston after seeing several specialists in London last week to get to the bottom of what medicos believe was a vestibular problem brought on by being struck in the side of the helmet by a James Anderson delivery on day two of the second Test.

There had been extra concern around Rogers' condition because of his recent history of concussion - he sat out two Tests against the West Indies last month for that reason - but when a repeat of that diagnosis was ruled out he remained in contention here.

There is unlikely to be a more clear picture of his availability until he faces the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the nets when the full Australian squad resumes training on Monday.

If he isn't given the green light he will be replaced by Shaun Marsh, who has scored centuries in his last three tour games for Australia, the latest against Derbyshire on Thursday.

"I's been great that every time Shaun's got an opportunity he's got a hundred in the tour games," batting coach Michael Di Venuto said. "He's got two over here and a hundred in the West Indies.

"For someone who hasn't had a history of scoring a lot of hundreds I think what we're seeing recently is fantastic and great news for Australian cricket. It's brilliant we've got someone on the fringes ready to go if an opportunity arrises."

England fast bowler Mark Wood, meanwhile, said they would bowl no differently towards Rogers if he plays this week.

"It's never great when you see someone get hit or go down," Wood said.

"You might have the intent or aggression to hit people but when they do get hit it's not really that nice, especially when he had a dizzy spell. If he declares himself fit for the next game that will not deter me from bowling a bouncer, though.

"If he's declared himself fit, then he's fit, as I'm sure the rest of our lads will think — Stokesy, Jimmy, Broady, Finny if he plays."
