The stickers on poles in Griffith Road stated No Islamic Takeover and made reference to Combat 18 and Blood and Honour, two groups widely described as neo-Nazi organisations.

Only a few streets away at Mirambeena Community Centre, an estimated 250 people attended Saturday's function organised by the Islamic Society of Albury-Wodonga.

President Yakub Mohammed was unaware of the stickers until contacted by The Border Mail.

"All I want to say is 'Take over what, man?'," he said.

"I mean, Albury-Wodonga's population is about 90 to 100,000 and the Muslims are only about 300.

"There's other religions that practise other faiths, does that mean they're going to take over?"

Mr Mohammed called it weird how people often associated Islam with such notions.

"I don't know why they get this stupid idea in their head that it's a takeover, we're just Muslims trying to live normally, that's all," he said.

"We just pray, practise our religion and, you know, work and go home and sleep and then come back to work again, just like normal humans, I suppose."

The president said he was pleased by the numbers at the community day, far more than at the same event last year.

"As we go, do it every year, we'll think of ways of improving and keep making it better," he said.

Visitors included school students, councillors, couples and people from other church groups.

"A lot of them were really happy to actually talk to a Muslim rather than just listen to what's on the news about ISIS or about Islam in general," he said.

"One guy, he said he hated all Muslims and stuff, says we're all terrorists.

"And then after talking to us for 15, 20 minutes, he apologised and he shook my hand, gave me a huge hug.

"He said it was arrogant of him to be thinking that without talking to real Muslims."
