Rankin, 75, stepped down as the club’s secretary at the annual meeting on Sunday after filling the role for more than 12 years.
He took on the job almost immediately after taking up the sport.
Lavington stalwart Maurie Moore asked about Rankin’s background and was told he had been an accountant with the SEC in Victoria.
Moore told him the club was looking for a secretary or treasurer.
“He asked which job I wanted and that’s how it happened,” Rankin said.
The club celebrates its 30th anniversary in October.
