The latest step was the recent installation of 60 250 watt solar panels on the roof of the town’s library, with another batch to follow shortly.
That will ultimately cut an estimated 500 tonnes from Indigo Council’s carbon footprint over the life of the installation through generating 25 megawatt hours a year.
Yackandandah is one of four Australian towns aiming to become 100 per cent renewable, along with Newstead, Byron Bay and Uralla.
“The council is hoping for savings in excess of $5000 for the first year, with an estimated payback after five years,” mayor Bernard Gaffney said.
Panels are already providing power at Yackandandah Kindergarten, Kiewa Bowls Club, Wahgunyah School of Arts, Chiltern Recreation Reserve, Chiltern Recreation Reserve and Rutherglen Kindergarten.
The council has also introduced energy saving LED lighting at its Yackandandah, Beechworth and Rutherglen depots.
