Officers have expressed concerns about changes implemented earlier this month that ban officers from chasing after fleeing vehicles in all but the most serious of cases. 

Police from at least five stations in the North East have expressed frustration about the changes to The Border Mail, with fears it gives drivers a free ticket to flee knowing they can't be chased. 

There have already been multiple occasions where speeding drivers have speed off from officers, with police members powerless to stop them. 

The changes to the policy were introduced as a safety measure for both police members and the public, with 13 people dying in pursuits in the state since 2010. 

Road policing command Superintendent Michael Grainger had a meeting with about 45 police members in Wangaratta on Friday to discuss the changes. 

Despite the concerns raised by the officers, Superintendent Grainger said the police would still continue to apprehend those who broke the law. 

“It was an open discussion,” he said. 

“There seemed to be  good level of understanding about the practical application of the policy in the district.

"Victoria Police places the community safety and police member safety at the forefront of our thinking every time they engage a vehicle in a pursuit.

"They will apprehend those who chose to flee and bring them before the courts as they do now, they will just be smarter about how they approach those vehicles.”

Victorian officers were involved in 1740 pursuits last year, resulting in 130 collisions. 

The coroner began an inquest and review of police pursuits in 2013 and handed down a report last year. 

The recommendations included that police never pursue a vehicle simply because it is fleeing. 

As a result, the new police police stations that pursuits should on be initiated or continued when there is an urgent need to prevent a serious risk to the public.

Pursuits may also be initiated if an offence has been committed or is about to be committed that will result in serious injury.
