THE final piece in the $245 million Holbrook bypass will commence on Wednesday when Greater Hume Shire rubber stamps improvements to two major streets in the town.

Holbrook was the last town between Melbourne and Sydney to be bypassed in 2013 with former prime minister Julia Gillard officially opening the 9.5 kilometre stretch of road.
Greater Hume councillors will be presented with a preferred tender from Excell Grey Bruni for the reconstruction of Albury and Young streets for close to $2 million at a special meeting on Wednesday.
As part of the bypass works, the shire was provided with funding for beautification of Holbrook's main street to support the ongoing economic viability of the town following its bypassing.
Major work has already been undertaken in Albury Street including reconstruction of footpaths and kerb and channel and installation of stormwater drainage between Wallace and Hume streets.
There has also been extensive tree planting along the entire length of Albury Street.
Remaining funds totalling $465,879 and carried forward funding of $68,085 committed by council to remedy the high kerb and stepped footpath issue near the Young Street intersection has provided a total of $533,964.00.
The council secured additional funding from NSW Roads and Maritime Services to repair Young Street from damage created by heavy vehicles during bypass works.
It amounted to $1,590,147.
Due to works being similar and in close proximity to eachother it was decided to bundle the projects together.
Albury Street works include removing and replacing footpaths and kerb and channel on both sides of the street, installing an underground stormwater system and creating new driveways to all properties.
Young Street improvements include reconstruction of road pavement and seal, removal and replacement of kerb and channel and footpaths, stormwater drainage and removal of trees if affected by the works.
The successful contractor will be allowed to detour traffic around the work sites during business hours.
But the contractor must open the road to traffic at night to ensure no detouring of traffic through residential streets will occur out of hours.
Greater Hume mayor and Holbrook resident Heather Wilton welcomed the pending works.
"We are going to have to divert traffic for a while, but the end result will be fantastic," she said.
