The Culcairn co-coach, who turns 40 in September, has played nine players 18 and under this season with the bulk coming from Billabong High School.
“They give me a hard time when I tell them to move the hats back 10 yards,” Way said.
“They always ask me what yards are.
“I feel old but they also make you feel young because they are always enthusiastic and have great attitudes.”
Youngsters Patrick Wall, Harley McIntyre, Nick Wright ,James Pitson, Shaun Turvey, Joel Merkel, Keegan Jenkins, Mitch Lauritzen and Josh Feuerherdt have played senior football this season.
Way said Wall had become one of his favourites.
“Each Thursday night we have goal-kicking competitions and he owes me 80 bucks so far,” Way said.
Way is looking forward to catching up with many old teammates and supporters when the Lions take on Billabong Crows at Culcairn on Saturday.
He played in an Oaklands’ under-16 premiership in the early 1990s.
