More than 150 riders and horses flocked to the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre on August 15 and 16 where Victoria’s Jasmine Dennison, 15, and her horse of about the same size, Bubble and Squeak, beat the big wigs at their game in the 1.35m and 1.45m grand prix events.
Dennison also claimed the Ken Gibbs memorial trophy for most successful rider in arena one, capping of an extraordinary weekend.
The two-day show replaces the well-known Wodonga Showjumping Spectacular and was held at the Albury facility for the first time to rave reviews from both riders and spectators alike.
Event spokesperson Jess Bertram said it was the first time the club had run a Spring Grand Prix, the first of a three-round series with competitions at Tatura this weekend and Euroa the following week.
Ms Bertram said the event was an important one for the region, showcasing top showjumping talent and the Border’s first-class equestrian facilities.
But it was up-and-coming young rider Dennison who proved the talking point of the event, in an epic David and Goliath battle in the grand prix aboard Bubble and Squeak.
“It was a surprise win for the young combination of Jasmine and her little pocket rocket knocking off the elite of the sport in this event,” Ms Bertram said.
Local riders certainly didn’t disappoint among hallowed company including former Olympian Russell Johnstone and World Cup winner Brook Dobbin.
In ring one Chiltern’s Jess Bertram and Ceejay Park Private Buddy were third in the 1.05m class, Walla eventer Tania Harding and Jirrima Yabba Dabba Doo were fourth in the 1.15m class and Tull Canning, Chiltern, was sixth in the Newcomer Championship aboard Wildwood Man of War.
In ring two Gerogery’s Wendy Kimpton and Jamieson claimed the best-performed honours while on day one Albury rider Coriah Keatings and Sugargum Viveinne were first in the 60cm class, followed by Ella Burns on Merlin and Lisa Jallands on Jasmine Storm.
Kimpton took out the 70cm class and Keatings second place on another mount, Mingara Lovebug while the 80cm class was won by Myrtleford’s Virginnia Armstrong and PD Daisy Dukes.
On the second day of competition in ring two, Wodonga’s Belle Morrow won the 60cm class on Esmerelda and Tess Morrow was third on Blaze while Kimpton again claimed the 70cm event.
The John Canning Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Most Successful Young Horse was awarded to Georgie Lucas and Peace Dreams.
Scott Wessell was second and third on two horses and donated his prize money back to the Cancer Council.
