Albury Council instigates moves to acquire St Matthew's church land
THE fate of a section of land behind St Matthew's Church has been brought to a head with Albury Council proposing to compulsorily acquire the prized piece of real estate.
In recent months, the church and council have been locked in tense negotiations for the land in QEII Square, which was originally the subject of a 99-year lease signed almost 50 years ago.
St Matthew’s instigated revoking the original licence in October last year and it came into effect on April 30.
Action group claims jetty plan win
A group that fought against a proposed jetty for a Lake Mulwala lagoon says it has scored a major win.
Save Chinaman’s Island Action Group campaign manager Christen Tynan made the comment after the group was told Moira Council was unable to consider the application.
“This is a fantastic result, not only for the people of Yarrawonga and our visitors,” Ms Tynan said.
Border Mail reporter wins award
Senior Border Mail journalist Nigel McNay has been honoured at a major media awards event.
McNay was recognised for best feature story (daily and state-based papers) at the prestigious Rural Press Club of Victoria’s Journalism and Photography Awards in Melbourne on Friday night.
McGowan issues train trip invite
Indi MP Cathy McGowan wants to give a senior Liberal a first-hand look at the North East’s second-rate train service.
Infrastructure and Regional Development Assistant Minister Jamie Briggs has been invited to join her for a trip on the V/Line passenger train.
Ms McGowan said on Sunday that doing this would give Mr Briggs a clear idea of just how the train needed to be improved.
Luck of the Irish
FORMER AFL big man Setanta O’hAilpin has sunk the boot into Yarrawonga, booting a whopping 10 goals in Sunday’s crushing win.
The big Irishman turned the screws with six in the second half as the reigning premiers had an emphatic 90-point triumph in the grand final re-match at the Albury Sportsground.
It was O’hAilpin’s best game for the season and took his goals tally to 55.
