A sharp-eyed community member noticed the jacket for sale on an auction website and brought it to the attention of Task Force Mallee investigators.
Police contacted the would-be seller in New South Wales who then donated the jacket to police to help with their investigations.
Police have not yet identified the girl but Major Crime Investigation Branch Detective Inspector Greg Hutchins said the jacket would be closely examined in a bid to identify its manufacturer and where it was sold.
"This is another piece in that jigsaw puzzle," he said.
"We are continuing to examine all the information in this case and each detail brings us a step closer to finding out who this lost little girl is and who took her life."
Task Force Mallee, which comprises 20 police officers from a variety of specialist areas, was formed after the little girl was found, along with a faded suitcase, items of clothing and a degraded quilt, discarded near the Karoonda Highway about two kilometres west of the Wynarka township on July 14.
What police know about the girl:
* Aged between two and a half and four years at time of death
* Likely Caucasian
* Had fair hair, 18 centimetres long
* Was 90 to 95 cm tall
* Was killed at another location
* Was killed some time between the start of 2007 and 12 to 18 months ago
*Most likely born in 2005 or 2006
