Police received a report of criminal damage at Andromeda chalets at about 5pm Saturday.
The occupants, aged in their mid-20s, smashed a double-glazed window and destroyed every light fitting in the kitchen and dining areas.
Alcohol was splashed on walls and shards of glass covered the ground from several beer bottles that had been shattered.
Furniture and walls were destroyed with holes by the men who were all visiting from the Hillside and Taylors Lakes areas in Melbourne.
It is believed up to 10 people were staying at the chalet, however Leading Senior Constable Bernard Murphy said the main man of interest had left when police arrived.
"We believe it was a mix of alcohol and drug use, but we are still investigating as to who was responsible," Sen-Const Murphy said.
"Some of them seemed to think it was fine because it was just damage that could be fixed.
"One of them even said 'it's not like someone's been killed' - there is just no respect.
"It is reprehensible and the thing that really surprised us was their attitude.”
The damage bill has been estimated to be more than $8000 which doesn't include the loss of income from rentals while the chalet is repaired.
Sen-Const Murphy said a weekend stay during peak season is valued about $4000 for two nights.
Police spoke to several other men staying in the accommodation and door-knocked surrounding chalets.
Management spoke to the men who made threats of violence before the police were called in.
Witnesses reported hearing noise and loud music to police, however most of the complaints were received by the chalet manager.
They police they had received numerous calls that objects had been thrown out into the snow and that males had been seen urinating off the top balcony.
The investigation into the incident will be ongoing.
Witnesses are being urged to contact Mount Hotham Police on (03) 5759 3535.
