President Alana Johnson and committee member Tammy Atkins this week fronted the joint standing committee on electoral matters after lodging one of more than 40 submissions to the inquiry.
The Voices For Indi submission took aim at the Liberals' "excessive" amount of signage at polling places including Wodonga schools, erecting material on election eve and using the Voices For Indi trademark orange on its material in an attempt to trick voters.
Voices For Indi provided the platform for independent Cathy McGowan to topple Liberal Sophie Mirabella at the 2013 election.
Ms McGowan rolled Mrs Mirabella by less than 500 votes with a return bout to take place at the next election.
"They asked for submissions and based on the feedback Voices For Indi had received after the federal election we decided to put a submission in," Ms Atkins said.
"Voting day ought to be a positive engagement and encourage us to reflect on our ability to vote.
"It is why we put forward some suggestions about how we think polling places might be more welcoming and less intimidating for people when they turn up on election day.
"There needs to be changes to the rules so that there is clear ownership and more transparency around material being put up."
The Voices For Indi recommendations included a limit on the amount of advertising signage per candidate at polling places, the placement of election material be restricted until 5am on election day and all material carry a "reasonable size" copy of a party’s logo.
Liberal federal electorate conference chairman for Indi Tony Schneider defended the actions of party members on election day.
"Our supporters and people who hand out are sticklers for the rules," he said.
"A lot of what happens at polling booths on election day is the cut and thrust of politics.
"I've heard of sore losers, but I've never heard of sore winners before.
"Voices For Indi members claim they aren't a political party, but what are they then?
"If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then it probably is a duck."
