He was upper catchment manager in Albury for 22 years.
This was part of 46 years of full-time work in the Murray-Darling Basin across a range of fields.
That includes everything from horticultural research and extension to media work, rural counselling, community development and local government.
Mr Wells earlier this year told his story to The Border Mail of his recovery from a tumour on his spine.
Mr Wells said he had enjoyed “a very fulfilling role” that took him across the basin to work with councils and communities from Roma to Adelaide, Canberra to Whyalla and Dubbo to the mouth of the Murray.
“My main role was to work to ensure that local government had a key and active role in managing our precious land and water resources as well as ensuring that councils and communities contributed positively to state and federal government land and water policies.”
