The Bendigo Bank Tallangatta Sports Festival is a major fundraiser for St Michael's Primary School and will be held on September 27.
Families from the primary school donate their time, food and drinks to the day with last year’s profits going toward a new school playground.
Now in its third year, festival organisers are aiming to raise enough money for a new shade sale.
In previous years, the event has attracted up to 250 people.
Organiser Belinda Newcombe said the committee had been working hard to try and draw in more participants.
“It's a very important event for the town and the run goes out onto the rail trail and across the Sandy Creek Bridge,” Mrs Newcombe said.
“We really want to make Tallangatta better known and grow it into a national running event.
“It can be really difficult to do that so we are trying to get the name out there.”
It is hoped the new date will help avoid clashes with other events in the region including Relay for Life.
Events kick-off at 8.30am and the runs range from two kilometres to a half-marathon.
In the strong man and strong woman events, competitors will attempt to pull a car.
A cash prize of $1000 is on offer for the serious runners if they can beat the half-marathon course record.
As an added bonus, each runner will get a free massage on the day.
For those who still need convincing, Towong Shire mayor David Wortmann said it was probably one of the most scenic running events in the region.
“I don't think you'll find a more spectacular setting that the rail trail running along Lake Hume,” Mr Wortmann said.
“It's a real family day, even if people want to walk.
“It's great to get visitors into town and it's good for business.”
Online entry costs $10 for the two-kilometre course, $15 for the five kilometre, $20 for the 10 kilometre and $60 for the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon.
