ALBURY LIBRARY MUSEUM
THREADS: Fashion and its influence on our society is the focus of History Week 2012, and a new exhibition at the Library Museum reveals the fascinating part Albury had to play in 20th century clothing. Threads reveals costumes and accessories from the Albury Council collection that reflects the region since the early 1900s. The exhibition also draws on the work of Albury’s old Adelyn Clothing Factory. Once used to manufacture drill trousers, drill berets and bandoleers for WWII soldiers, the factory eventually became renowned for its dressmaking and particularly its lace. “Adelyn has a really interesting place in Albury’s history,” says Albury Council collections co-ordinator Bridget Guthrie. “It was originally used to uniform our WWII soldiers, but in peacetime switched to dressmaking. The staff there produced some exquisite work and at its peak, the business employed 400 staff. But work was very tough. Staff had to produce 35 dresses an hour, which is incredible to think when you consider the equipment and technology available at the time.”
Highlights on display include a 1960s dress made locally from the Adelyn factory, turn-of-the-century women’s undergarments and fashion advertising boards from the 1950s. The textile collection includes hand-made lace examples, lace making machines and embroidery samplers. Fashions from throughout the 1900s are on show: 1910s undergarments, 1950s evening gowns and 1970s flairs. Now in its 16th year, History Week is an initiative of the History Council NSW and explores different themes that have helped shape our society. Threads is now on-show at the Library Museum.
Until September 16
WORKSHOP SPACE, WANGARATTA ART GALLERY
FIESTA: A KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOUR — 2012 INTERNATIONAL SCARF EXCHANGE: An annual event since 1994, the Australian Scarf Exchange project first started when the Canberra Handweavers & Spinners Guild came up with an idea to link Australian spinning and weaving guilds with a common theme and promote more interaction between the groups that are spread across the country. Now involving artists from outside Australia, the International Scarf Exchange is full of surprises with scarves ranging from super fine yarn superbly crafted to chunky yarn giving wonderful texture. Each year the project and exhibition is hosted in a different Australian state and all guild members have the fibre they contribute crafted by someone else from interstate or abroad. The creators come from the far corners of Australia and just a few from beyond our shores, including New Zealand and Orcas Island, off the coast of Seattle. The imagination of the creators, combined with their crafting skills, is a credit to the universal nature of spinning, weaving and felting skills. Phone (03) 5722 0761.
Until September 16
GIGS ART GALLERY, WODONGA
FILTER: An exhibition of recent works by Mary-Rose Riley, a retelling of early sensory experiences — the rhythms of music and daily jobs and making things and mending and religious practice and the turn of seasons. Our small stories move between the unconscious and the conscious mind through the filter of selective memory, and assert their subtle influence. The exhibition is dedicated to Mary-Rose Riley’s parents, Helena and Johannes Rijs. Opening: 3pm Saturday, September 1.
Until September 23
GALLERY 294, COROWA
ON AND OFF THE WALL: Features recent 2D and 3D works by Rutherglen artist Brenda Tuddenham. The 2D works offer wonderful explorations of colour, texture and atmosphere while the 3D works are explorations of techniques and form. Tuddenham has used traditional techniques such as crochet to create exquisite sprays of fuchsias and roses. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm at Gallery 294 in Honour Avenue, Corowa.
Until September 28
ARTS SPACE WODONGA
MARKING TIME: In approaching landscape as a subject, Jo Davenport considers time as both a fleeting moment and as an expansive infinitum. Time promises that you may never view the same scene twice. With that in mind, Davenport’s paintings hope to capture landscape in the spontaneous instance when the past is almost gone and the future is just starting to appear. The result is an impulse act of colour and mark making that brings the transient experience into view. Official opening 5.30pm Friday, August 31.
Until September 29

PORTRAYER PORTRAYS: A thought-provoking exhibition that showcases portraiture and self-portraiture from the Albury Art Gallery collection. Artists, writers and performers who are often shielded by their own artworks are portrayed in this exhibition. We can be great admirers and are often highly influenced and inspired by their work, yet we may not recognise them if we passed them in the street. Portrayer Portrays eliminates the art and politics and puts the artist right in front of us. Biographical details accompanying the portraits give us an insight into the life and career of the artist which ultimately gives us indication of their influences and what urged them to create artistic icons of modern history.

THE MUSE GALLERY, MILAWA
GENTLE AFTERNOONS: In this show Alan Philips has returned to his roots as a painter and to where it all began — the Northern Territory. There he saw in the early ’70s in the Aboriginal camps, the artwork generated by the old men, and it was there that he saw how to paint the land. He sat in the sand and watched as the old masters painted dreams, images, stories and the deepest truths of their lives and their country. In Gentle Afternoons, Philips comes close to nature and the dreams and images that have stayed with him for many years. The paintings may be viewed as aerial shots, with braided creeks and the strange sinks and sharp shadows, the odd swift colour change you might see somewhere over central Australia. They could be seen as microscopic views of the exposed crust of a drying salt lake or the teeming life on the surface of a mudflat. The tiny may mimic the vast in beautiful fractal patterns. Alan paints what he sees and feels and loves in the landscape with humble respect. His choice of colour may seem at times to be surprising, but it is authentic: it both shocks and soothes. He leads us, in ‘Gentle afternoons’ through a well-loved and well-remembered landscape. Opening 2pm September 1, sponsored by the Milawa Cheese Company and Wood Park Wines. Gallery open 10am to 5pm, Thursday to Monday including public holidays.
