But part of living in a democratic country means having to tolerate a broad range of views, some steeped in stupidity, some born out of fear and others dangerously driven by hate.
Fear is at the rather dark heart of the United Patriots Front, and its message is one of hate. The group’s ability to thrive and flourish wholly depends on its success in propagating that fear, and turning it to hate.
One of the group’s leaders, Shermon Burgess, has flagged his intention to come to Albury to support those opposed to a mosque being built in the city.
In a Facebook address to followers, he claimed many people in Albury are opposed to a mosque.
But when plans were announced for a mosque to replace the run-down building used by the Islamic Society on Wagga Road, there was no furore, there was no outcry, no howls of protest.
So it would seem most unlikely that Burgess has gained his “insight” about opposition to a mosque from any conversations with the people that actually – you know – might live here.
Someone not surprisingly more in touch with the views of the people of Albury would be mayor Kevin Mack, who says the community has been accepting of plans for a mosque.
Unlike the opinions of Burgess, Cr Mack’s observation would be one based on actual reality and being a part of the community concerned.
But unfortunately Cr Mack is right when he says that everyone has a right to express their view. His hope would be that the Albury community doesn’t get “sucked in” to other people’s issues.
That is what has happened in Bendigo, where there have been heated clashes over that city’s plans for a mosque.
A protest organised by the United Patriots Front last month saw hundreds turn out, with police being forced to use capsicum spray and lock down large areas of the city.
It would be a very sad day for the Border if a group of outsiders were allowed to stir up the same trouble in our backyard, and make a mockery of our city and its people to push their own agenda.
