The Twitterverse was quick to reach for the memes, with highlights including a FIFA ethics committee made up of silver screen scoundrels Saruman the White (The Lord of the Rings), Blofeld (You Only Live Twice), Senator Palpatine (The Empire Strikes Back) and Voldemort (Harry Potter.)

Swiss prosecutors last month opened a criminal investigation into Blatter over a Caribbean World Cup TV rights contract he signed, and a 2011 payment of 2 million Swiss francs (US$2.07 million) to Platini.
