While a small amount of weekend rain brought some relief, forecasters are predicting little rainfall in coming months.

Retired CSIRO weather officer Peter Nelson said things were “not looking that marvelous”.

“I would say it wasn’t that much of a help,” he said of the weekend rain. It would be nicer to have a lot more.”

About 4mm fell in Albury Sunday morning followed by another 1.8mm later in the day.

Wangaratta recorded 6mm of rain Sunday morning and a further 1.4mm to Monday morning.

While there were thunderstorms at the weekend, Mr Nelson said they had not brought much rain and could instead cause bushfires. 

Firefighters are bracing for a potentially dangerous summer and are urging people to prepare their properties and fire plans.

“I think the heaviest rain we will get in our region will be next week, and also the second week of November” Mr Nelson said. 

“There then won’t be much until February. 

“We wont get much hot weather until probably early November, but when it does hit it is likely to be quite warm.

“It should be getting up to 40 degrees by early December.”

The temperature in Albury is forecast to rise steadily this week, reaching a peak of 32 degrees on Friday. 

Scattered showers are predicted on Sunday.
