The NBN fibre rollout is happening five years earlier than expected in some towns following an updated schedule to 2018 released on Friday by the federal government.

Corowa, Howlong, Yarrawonga and Mulwala will receive fibre-to-node access to the NBN in less than two years as part of the schedule.

Cobram-Barooga, Finley and Deniliquin are also in line for a 2017 hook-up.

The updated schedule has been helped by NBN contractors beginning construction in the Albury area next year and remaining locally to connect neighbouring centres.

Some smaller areas are already enjoying fixed wireless access to the NBN with the Sky Muster satellite coverage also planned in the next two years to plug remaining blackspots.

Mulwala Progress Association president Robert Purtle said Yarrawonga-Mulwala residents and businesses had almost given up hope of NBN access in the short-term.

"It will be fantastic if this is the case," he said.

"Everyone around here was pretty much resigned to the fact we were a long way from getting it.

"The dates we had been told were somewhere between 2020 and 2025."

Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said most of her electorate should be working with quicker broadband by 2018 with the inclusion also of Broken Hill in the update.

"From growing families through to small and large businesses in Deniliquin, Corowa, indeed every town on this list deserve the benefits super-fast broadband can bring," she said.

"This will really bolster our diverse and important rural communities.

“Combined with the new NBN satellite service from early next year and the impressive fixed wireless network, most of Farrer will be hooked up to fast broadband by 2018 and I, for one, cannot wait.

"This delivers the certainty we are after and sees the NBN delivered much sooner than originally expected."

Corowa Shire deputy mayor Mark Shields welcomed the federal government announcement.

"While for some people it isn't soon enough, the shire understands it is difficult resource such a large infrastructure project like the NBN," he said.

"We eagerly await the economic benefits."
