Police will target alcohol affected drivers on highways and freeways from Friday as part of a state-wide campaign.
Operation Furlong will run for five days in Victoria as Melbourne Cup race meets take place across the state.
Wodonga highway patrol Sergeant Cameron Roberts said drivers should expect to be breath tested.
“Some people will be availing themselves of a nice long weekend which could see an increase in traffic to the area,” he said.
“People use this time of year as an opportunity for social events such as races and barbecues and with that comes the inherent potential for drink driving.
“The message is to plan accordingly.
“If you know you’re going to drink plan an alternative means of getting home.
“Quite often some low reading drink drivers are people who tell us they have miscalculated, but again it comes down to a failure to plan and excuses.”
The operation will run from Friday until Tuesday November 3.
