Sydney-based writer Julia-Rose Lewis called on the life experiences of the young cast – aged between 15 and 26 – to ensure the script was believable.
"The play was a commission from HotHouse so we developed it here all year with that group,” Lewis says.
"It's been written for them specifically, with all their input from the very beginning."
Between The Clouds is about human relationships and dealing with emotions, empathetically told through the eyes of the internet generation but covering topics relevant to all ages.
“Julia came in and we had all these ideas and a bit of a brief for what we thought the play could be,” director Travis Dowling says.
“She used the studio members to kind of go 'what are your experiences with social media and how do you guys communicate and what's important to you in your lives at the moment?'
"Then she went away and crafted a play, she came back a few times and went through it ... so we built a script collaboratively."
The collaboration has helped the ensemble broaden their theatre knowledge in a hands-on way.
"I wasn't crash hot at sports and mum said you need something to do on a Saturday to get out of the house,” says Scots School Albury Year 12 student Lewis Stanley, a nine-year HotHouse veteran with sights set on a career in the theatre..
"I just thoroughly enjoy it ... I couldn't think about doing too many other things, I couldn't do a desk job, this gives you so much creative licence.”
After its Border debut the play has a short run at the Australian Theatre for Young People in Sydney, exposing the cast and subject to a broad audience.
“What it means to be a teenager never changes whether you were a teenager in the 20s, or a teenager in the 50s, or a teenager now, the struggles you face as a human are very similar” says ATYP resident dramaturg Jennifer Medway.
“You can always look back at that time and link it to yourself no matter what age you are."
