Mr Miosge, 67, was found inside the back of his burning rental home in Willowbank Road. 

The front of the house was engulfed in flames at 6.20am and smoke could be seen from the Hume Highway. 

Firefighters removed him from the brick building but were unable to resuscitate him.

Mr Miosge has been remembered as a character who was a passionate fishing advocate.

Friends said he freely gave his time to help others.

Vietnam and Associated Veterans Fishing Club president Mark Moeller said he had helped out underprivileged children and those from rough backgrounds.

“We have a memorial board with a lure on it for every member who has passed away,” he said.

“There are seven on the board and Stan will be number eight.”

Mr Moeller remembered Mr Miosge, who had been battling ill health, as “a bit of a character”.

“It’s a good man now gone,” he said.

“He had his fair share of fish, don’t worry about that.

“He had his rod in every day.”

Aside from giving fishing information to keen anglers – including a regular column in The Border Mail as The Hook – Mr Miosge was a keen gardener and provided produce to local pubs.

He regularly took part in fish releases throughout the North East and lobbied governments for fish stocks.

Russell Mason was shocked by his death.

“On the fishing side of things, he would always give his time,” he said.

“He was never short of time to help anyone with fishing clinics and things like that.

“If there was a fish restocking going on, he was there to help.

“You would have to say he was positive for fishing.”

Many people called Mr Miosge for advice when they were struggling to catch a fish, which he freely gave.  

But he also had a chequered history with the law. 

He was sentenced to a minimum two-and-a-half years jail for arson and burglary in February 1988.

He was in an 11-hour siege with police in March 2000 and was sentenced to a minimum four years in jail for sex offences and using a weapon to hinder police.
