James Meredith proudly declared he was from the Border after starring in the Socceroos’ 3-0 win over Kyrgysztan in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday night.
It is believed Meredith lived in Albury until he was three or four.
“His dad Greg Pollard was a local boy,” Albury soccer stalwart Steve Hayes said.
“He reached the dizzy heights of number three in the world in squash.
“When Greg retired from professional squash they lived here for a little while before moving on.”
Meredith has spent his career in England's lower leagues.
He started out at Derby County and has had spells at Cambridge, Chesterfield, Shrewsbury, Telford and York, as well as a stint at Irish club Sligo Rovers before joining Bradford in 2012.
AWFA president Jacqui Findlay was delighted Meredith gave the region a plug.
“Archie Thompson, Josh Kennedy and now James Meredith is fantastic,” she said.
