Ms McGowan will face two Coalition rivals, Liberal Sophie Mirabella and National Party candidate Marty Corboy, who won pre-selection on Saturday, plus at least four other contenders including Labor's Eric Kerr.
"My whole reason is to make this seat competitive," Ms McGowan said.
"With the Nats running a candidate we are hopefully going to have some really good policy debates.
"Just watching the Liberal candidate, we've seen more out of her in the last two months than in the 12 years she was a member.
"It is a fantastic thing that is happening in Indi."
Mrs Mirabella also welcomed Mr Corboy into the Indi battleground.
“It is good choice for the Nationals to have selected a mainstream candidate,”she said.
“Marty is an experienced campaigner and ran as part of the Coalition senate ticket at the last election.
“I welcome him to the Coalition team in Indi.”
