Jake Andrew Dean drank 20 cans of Jim Beam bourbon whiskey at a Wodonga house party on September 18 between 10am and 11.23pm.
Twenty minutes later a Highway Patrol police car was moving off at 20km/h after traffic lights turned green at the Mate Street-Union Road five-ways intersection.
Police saw a hatchback also heading north towards them at between 80km/h and 90km/h in what was a 60km/h zone.
Albury Local Court heard this week that Dean was at the wheel of the car as it sped through the area.
Magistrate Tony Murray was told how Dean’s car was weaving between the two north-bound lanes
Police believed a collision with the back of their car was imminent, so to avoid this swerved into the left-hand turning lane.
Dean’s car passed them “within less than a metre”.
He then kept driving north onto Wagga Road.
“The accused was well-affected by alcohol and unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred,” police said in facts handed to Mr Murray.
Dean’s explanation for his driving was that he was the victim of “ongoing assaults” from “unknown persons”.
He would not name his alleged pursuers.
“He was driving to get away from them,” police said.
“The accused’s level of intoxication and manner of driving posed a high potential risk of death (and) injury and damage to property, not only to police but members of the public.”
The court heard Dean, 22, had once held a NSW provisional licence.
In a brief appearance, the Springdale Heights man pleaded guilty to driving with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol.
He pleaded guilty also to driving a motor vehicle while licence suspended.
Mr Murray ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
“There’s some risk of you going to jail for these offences,” he told Dean.
Mr Murray said Dean’s offending contained “some aggravating factors”.
He adjourned sentencing to January 18.
