While New Zealand quick Trent Boult was guarded about the long-term ramifications for the game, the overwhelming sentiment for the new concept was one of excitement and tremendous optimism.

Former greats Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Michael Vaughan were among those who gave the thumbs up.

Australia's cricketers had expressed reservations in the weeks leading into the Test but the enthusiasm of the crowd has made an early impression.

"That was the exciting thing for the boys, the atmosphere out there was amazing," Peter Siddle, who claimed his 200th Test wicket said.

"From early on till the end of play, the crowd was upbeat.

"When we were on a roll and getting a few wickets and walking down after the 200 on the boundary the crowd and the cheer, it was exciting for everyone.

"The Adelaide Test match is always one of my favourites and to play it with a crowd like that definitely surprised a few boys."

The Australian Cricketers Association will conduct a review of the Test but Siddle said it had "definitely been a great day" for cricket.

"I think everyone who came and witnessed what went on will be very impressed with the whole experience," Siddle said.

The pink ball proved difficult to play under lights, as expected, but the discipline of Australia's bowlers and New Zealand's poor batting were the chief reasons for the Kiwis' collapse.

Nor have there been any complaints expressed thus far concerning a lack of visibility, which had been a major cause of scepticism.

The Adelaide Oval wicket, sporting extra grass to help preserve the pink ball, offered far more assistance to the bowlers than the decks in Brisbane and Perth. Although 12 wickets fell for 254 runs it was far from a bowler's haven.

Black Caps paceman Trent Boult said the ball had behaved as predicted but was guarded when asked what meaning the strong start to day-night Tests had on the future.

The Kiwis will trial a round of day-night cricket in their domestic competition in February with the view of staging a day-night Test next year against Bangladesh.

"We need to see a bit more of it to be honest. There was a great buzz out there, everyone could see that," Boult said.

"It's amazing to be playing Test cricket in front of nearly 50,000 people. We need to see how this one goes and how it pans out but it is exciting for Test match cricket."
