Chasing 238 at the Bill O’Callaghan Oval, the Magpies fell just eight runs short in a nail-biting finish on Saturday.
Jarryd Wallace and Tim Lewis had the chance to become heroes for the Magpies, but their last-wicket partnership ended with Lewis run out for five.
It left Wallace at the crease, unbeaten on 51, with the Magpies bowled out for 230.
City Colts veteran Kent Braden starred with ball, taking 3-64.
“It was a good result in the end,” Braden said.
“We dropped a few catches but we’re pleased to get away with the six points.
“We knew we were in with a fair shot but they batted pretty well.
“We had them in a bit of strife but a few of their kids got them back in the game.”
After losing the early wicket of Hamish Cox, Brad Melville and Nick Hallam then put on 54 for the second wicket.
The Magpies middle order collapsed, but the tail wagged.
Apart from Wallace’s half century, Nic Cox contributed 37 at the bottom of the order.
For Colts, Jayden Vescio made a timely return to form, taking 2-49.
“He’s only going to get better from here,” Braden said.
Elsewhere, Rovers United Bruck had a one wicket win over Ovens Valley United at the W.J. Findlay Oval, Yarrawonga-Mulwala thrashed Benalla Violet Town United, Corowa had a three-wicket win at home to Greta and Beechworth thrashed Delatite by 62 runs at home.
