Leading Senior Constable David Richards said the baker from Valentine's Traditional Sourdough Bakehouse reported the theft of his van just after 7am Monday.
The Chiltern officer followed the van south on the Hume Freeway at about 100km/h before pulling it over just outside Wangaratta after 7.30am and the thief’s getaway plan was toasted.
Leading Senior Constable Richards said the 47-year-old driver from Yarra Valley told police he had permission to drive to Wangaratta.
The driver later confessed to the alleged theft of the bakery van, rather than paying the dough to get home.
“He had to take someone from Melbourne to Wodonga the other day in their car,” Leading Senior Constable Richards said.
“He got stranded and came across this car with the keys in it.”
The man was charged with theft of motor vehicle and bailed to appear in court.
