CFA’s District 22 operations officer Graeme Neil said five brigades took almost two hours to bring the fire under control after it started at about 7am.
He said it was contained within a 60-foot by 100-foot shed on a Prescotts Road property and did not threaten any other buildings.
“An advice warning has been put out to the the community for the smoke,” Mr Neil said.
“It was more than likely spontaneous combustion.
“We’ve had a bit of an issue with that this year.”
Hay stacks can burst into flames if they have a high moisture content.
The fire will be monitored for the next 24 to 48 hours.
The CFA advised residents that the fire would continue to generate significant amounts of smoke over the next few days.
