Currently Victoria's number one ranked deaf golfer, Connell is hoping to raise funds for the state team to travel to January's Australian Deaf Games in Adelaide.

From there, Connell aims to travel to the World Deaf Championships, to be held in Denmark in July, 2016.

To assist with the fundraising efforts, Connell has organised a golf day at the Wodonga golf course.

With roughly 30 entrants so far, Connell was hoping to double that figure before teeing off on December 11.

“All the proceeds will go towards getting the team to Adelaide,” he said.

“This is the first time we've undertaken a fundraising effort like this.

“We want to see whether this type of thing will work, then hopefully hold more in other areas as well.”

While the fundraising day is shaping up to be a relaxed and friendly hitout, Connell is focused on performing to the best of his ability in Adelaide.

“This is my career,” he said.

“This is my passion, I want to play golf.

“I've always enjoyed being outdoors, I used to work here at the Wodonga course.

“That passion has grown and grown since I started playing around eight years ago.”

That practice paid off for Connell earlier this year, winning the Victorian Deaf Golf Open Championship at the Mandalay Golf Club in August. 

The Victorian team is hoping to bring home the Alex Baldwin Trophy for the winning team from Adelaide, 

Alongside the proceeds from the golf day, a number of local businesses have supported Connell's cause.

“We've had a few donations come through which we're really grateful for, every little bit counts for us,” he said.

“Hopefully the golf day will be a success as well.”

Wodonga Golf Club pro Mandy Buchanan said she had been impressed by Connell's drive to get to the top level.

“Dean has done an absolutely fantastic job to get to the state team, it's a great achievement,” she said.

“We're pleased to have been able to support him at various points along the way.

“Any person with a disability who can achieve at the level that these golfers have deserves a bit of recognition.”

The golf day will be held at the Wodonga Golf Club on December 11, at a cost of $30 a head. 

Commencing at 12.30pm with a shotgun start, prizes will also be on offer for the nearest to the pin and the longest drive. 

A barbecue lunch will also be on offer, and half the proceeds will go to Connell and the rest of the team.
