MY BEST HOLIDAY WAS well, I wasn't officially on holiday, but I think my best trip was two years ago when I was working in San Francisco, performing in a play called The Black Watch. I lived there for more than three months and truly fell in love with the city. It's got an amazing vibe and you can still get a sense of the role the city had in the counterculture movement of the '60s.

THE BEST HOTEL I'VE STAYED IN is The Movenpick in Bangalore, south India. The hotel itself was pretty spectacular – including a great gym and spa – but what really made it stand out for me was the staff. They go above and beyond to make sure you're comfortable and have everything you need.
I ALWAYS TAKE my sunglasses – I really can't be seen anywhere without them! Ray-Bans aside, I always take my portable sound system so that I have music everywhere I go.
FOR A PERFECT HOLIDAY I NEED sunshine – this is especially important as I'm from Scotland where it's in very short supply. Also, great company, good food and drink and a hefty amount of outdoorsy and cultural stuff to explore.
MY BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE IS TO travel light; you always end up wearing only a few different pieces of clothing. Also, go well prepared but have no expectations … go with the flow.
MY WORST EXPERIENCE ON HOLIDAY WAS thankfully short-lived. I was in New York and became convinced that I had caught Ebola. However, after working myself into a frenzy it turned out that I was just severely hungover.
THE BIGGEST PACKING MISTAKE I've MADE was buying way too much stuff while I'm on holiday and then finding that I have no room for it when I pack to come home!
THE NEXT PLACE I WANT TO GO TO IS easy, definitely Peru in South America – and for so many reasons. I'm a big fan of history so the Incan ruins at the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are very appealing, as is hiking the Inca Trail.
