But despite a few small flare ups, the Leneva fire that threatened homes the previous day remained under control.
Wodonga Fire Brigade senior station officer Brett Myers said fire investigators confirmed a tree that fell on a Brewers Road property sparked the fire.
It had already been burning from the major Indigo Valley blaze in December.
CFA incident controller Graham Healy said an observation plane found more than 200 hot spots still burning on Wednesday within the 190-hectare fire.
“Any really bad weather and it would probably give us trouble again,” he said.
“There’s a lot of work to be done to mop up.”
About 100 firefighters spent the day digging out tree stumps which still contained fire.
Crews planned to guard the scene overnight before restarting the hard work on Thursday.
