Students have started returning after the summer holidays which means 40km/h zones are again being enforced.
Sergeant Michael Connors said there would be no excuses for those caught breaking the road rules near schools.
“We had one incident about a month ago where a parent was nursing an infant in their lap in the front seat,” he said.
“To me, that’s just stupidity.
“If there was any impact there that child would go through a windscreen.
“I think people get complacent.”
Sergeant Connors said police were targeting school zones.
“The message is that people need to be aware that school is back,” he said.
“The school speed zone of 40km/h is there for a reason.
“If you are stopped by police for doing the wrong thing, we don’t want to hear excuses.”
Many Victorian schools returned Wednesday and NSW schools on Thursday.
The speed limits are active from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.
