Their Winnebago RV – valued about $100,000 – was gutted by fire on the Hume Highway on Tuesday afternoon.
The 57-year-old driver had been travelling with his 18-year-old son when he switched fuel tanks near Wangaratta.
The vehicle shuddered and he kept driving, before being told by a passing truck driver that it was on fire.
They only had seconds to grab their phones and escape before calling Triple-0.
Sergeant Michael Connors said the RV was gutted and gas tanks with a bleeder valve continued to burn.
“It took some time before it was actually under control and fully extinguished,” he said.
There were long delays for other drivers.
Sergeant Connors said other family members had flown home and said the father and son had planned to hire a car to return to Melbourne.
