For many, it was hard to believe she had survived a 14-metre fall in Peru and other were inspired by how determined she was to recover.
As the momentum continued to grow, the Border water polo community came together to plan a fundraiser for the 23-year-old from Albury.
The Wornes family has been heavily involved with the Albury Pool Pirates and last week friends from the club met to plan the event.
Family friend Peter Nugent said they hoped about 300 people would turn out to support a silent auction on March 4.
The event, with food, drinks and entertainment, will kick off at 6.30pm at the Newmarket Hotel in Albury.
“The amount of friends she has around town, everyone is really getting behind it,” he said.
“There has been a lot of interest, we've got about 85 accepted already online.
“And we have a very strong group working on it.
“The Newmarket Hotel has been very generous donating the function area for the night.
“It's (funds) for immediate and ongoing costs for Emily.”
The organising committee is looking to secure items for auction and businesses to sponsor the event.
Mr Nugent said bands from the region had already offered to provide free entertainment for the night.
“We'd like to raise $10,000, that’s about our figure,” he said.
“I think the night is really about Emily and everyone has really united to get behind it.
“We want to make the greater water polo family, including all clubs in the Ovens and Murray, feel welcome.
“The important thing is when something like this happens in community, everyone gets together and get behind them.”
Meanwhile, an online fundraiser has received 240 donations from friends and strangers who have left messages of support for Emily.
More than $22,000 has been raised but, with months of intensive physiotherapy ahead, the funds will be needed.
