DonateLife released the Victorian donation statistics on Tuesday that showed the state had 126 donors last year.
From this five donors were from Albury-Wodonga, which resulted in 17 recipients of organs.
NSW numbers were also record-breaking with 379 organs donated in 2015.
Albury Wodonga Health's nurse donation specialist, Tracy Jackson encourages families to have a discussion about their decision in regards to becoming a donor.
“When the family knows their loved ones wish it is easy to consent to the donation because they are fulfilling their loved ones wishes,” she said.
Only 1 per cent of patients who die in hospital are in the correct circumstances to become a donor.
“We need to optimise the opportunity by having more registered organ donors, (it) is one of the best ways to improve donation rates,” Mrs Jackson said.
Conditions surrounding death to become a tissue donor are broader but without consent from family the transplant cannot go ahead.
“Our main message is that the decision to become donor is personal and an important one.
“Make the right decision for yourself by registering your decision,” she said.
Someone who knows of the benefits of organ transplants and who has a donation to thank for her second chance of life is Noela McGuffie.
“I think it’s wonderful and gives other people the opportunity re-experience life again as I am,” she said.
Mrs McGuffie underwent a double lung transplant six months ago after being diagnosed with with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
She said that she encourages everyone to go on the donation list and since her transplant her large family have all registered.
“People hadn’t thought about it before but once they saw the difference it made to me a wide range of people are now on the list to donate,” she said.
“It was an incredible reaction.”
