Although Brian admitted it wasn’t love at first sight, the couple said the key to success was loyalty. 

“Just be loyal to one another I suppose,” Beryl said. 

Brian put their long marriage down to their ability to stay clam. 

“Don’t have too many arguments, we haven’t had any real big ones I don’t think,” he said. 

“Just tiffs more or less,” Beryl added. 

As Beryl has suffered from a rare disease for the past three years, the couple have put their vows to practice. 

“I have had a lot of sickness,” she said. 

“I have had cancer and in the present time I’m battling with HCM cardiomyopathy which is very rare and very debilitating.”  

However, their love and cheekiness has not diminished.

Brian told The Border Mail his wife was a “rare specimen”. 

Now his wife’s full-time carer, he never forgets one of her favourite dishes – pickles.

Their romance began at a friends’ wedding in 1946 after spotting each other on the West Wyalong sporting bus. 

After 65 years of marriage a collection of rings take over Beryl’s ring finger, a symbol of love and how far the couple have come.

“My wedding ring was so thin and was only worth 3 pounds so I had it joined with my engagement ring and on our 25th wedding anniversary we bought a new wedding ring”. 

The couple lived in West Wyalong until 1978 where Mr Nicholson ran his father's butchery business before becoming a publican. 

After moving around other parts of Australia, they settled in Albury.

Together they owned the Howlong pub for three years and raised their big family. 

“We have six children but lost a child a few hours old because she had no diaphragm,” Beryl said. 

These days, their family is a little larger with 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
