Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) launched its first international exhibition featuring Marilyn Monroe – Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon – on Friday as eateries, accommodation providers and La Trobe University came to the party.
La Trobe Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo campuses will explore the Hollywood icon’s life and legacy in its elective subject Exhibiting Culture: Marilyn.
Open to the public as well as undergraduates, the subject will be offered on April 15-17 at Bendigo and April 29-May 1 in Albury. Participants can attend one or both weekends.
Also coinciding with Bendigo Art Gallery's own Marilyn exhibition, participants will soak up these displays of the star's life, as researchers, critics and writers.
MAMA’s on-site restaurant Canvas Eatery has embraced the 1950s Americana theme to coincide with Marilyn, which runs until May 8.
Canvas Eatery Tim Tehan said they would offer a couple of American-style dishes on their menu throughout the exhibition.
“We’ve got an American-style cheeseburger and a buttermilk-fried chicken bun with the option of fries among the items on the day-time menu,” he said.
Mr Tehan said among other highlights was a themed dinner event in conjunction with MAMA – My Heart Belongs to Daddy! – Dinner and a Show.
He said the menu – influenced by Marilyn’s favourite dishes – would be held in the gallery on Wednesday, March 30.
“Marilyn loved beef liver, carrots and artichokes … there will also be a turkey ballotine with Marilyn’s own recipe for turkey stuffing,” Mr Tehan said.
My Heart Belongs to Daddy! is a fun, frivolous night of performance and sound artistry dedicated to and inspired by the mystery and magic of Marilyn.
Cinephiles can see Marilyn on the big screen when Regent Cinemas Albury presents Some Like it Hot on Sunday, March 6.
Marilyn sizzles in her role as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, the all singing, all dancing, ukulele playing member of a performing women's band in the 1959 comedy.
Guests are invited to dress up as Marilyn, Tony Curtis or Jack Lemmon to win a bottle of sparkling wine.
Tickets to the MoMAMA fundraiser available at the Regent Cinemas or MAMA.
