The men and women have varied backgrounds but have been staying at the oval from as long as a week to two months.

The volunteers have come to be a part of BlazeAid and help farmers and property owners get back on their feet after a fire ripped through the Indigo Valley in December.

BlazeAid Barnawartha coordinator Michael McIntosh said 158 people from as far as Tasmania and Queensland had cycled through to help out on 52 properties.

“It’s just a matter of us picking out the properties to go out on,” he said.

“It’s hard for them, their fences are ruined, and it’s a lot of money to put them back up again.

“Our crews go out and pull the old fences down to put new ones up.”

So far 22 kilometres of boundary fencing has been put up and there are currently five crews working every day to install more.

One of these crews is made up of married grey nomads Jan and Doug Taylor, John Belknap from Wisconsin in the United States and Wangaratta’s Stuart Russell, who finished off four kilometres of fencing on Friday around the Indigo Creek Road property of Colin and Sandra Pooley.

Mrs Taylor said she and her husband had been involved in BlazeAid camps since 2009 after Black Saturday.

“We've got free time so it just helps people,” she said.

“We might not have all the energy all the time.”

Mrs Taylor said the small group had been working on the fence since Tuesday last week and they even had a run in with a six-foot king brown snake the other day.

Mr and Mrs Pooley were thrilled with the work the crew had done.

“They have been very professional,” Mrs Pooley said.

“We've had some rough terrain for them … it would have taken us years to get done what they've managed to do for us.

“Colin and I hope to volunteer our time in a year or two with BlazeAid workers.”

The volunteers could be in Barnawartha for another month or two yet.

Mrs Taylor said if anyone wanted to lend a hand they would be welcome.
