Barnawartha CFA volunteers were called to the Hume Freeway about 3 kilometres north of the township at about 3pm.
Brigade captain Howard Smith said the driver looked to be in his 30s or 40s.
He said the man was semi-trapped and semi-conscious when firefighters arrived.
The man was taken to hospital with a precautionary neck brace by paramedics.
Traffic was reduced to one lane for a short period.
Mr Smith said the dog appeared to have suffered from a bit of shock from the crash and was recovering in Barnawartha until his owner could go and pick him up.
The fire captain said the brigade had responded to several vehicle incidents since January.
“It’s been a hectic start to the year,” Mr Smith said.
“It started with a hectic end and moved into the new year too.”
