But Dale Joshua Quinlivan told Albury Local Court this week that he was ashamed of his actions.
Magistrate Michael Crompton asked Quinlivan if he wanted to seek legal advice on the charges of resist arrest and assault police.
Quinlivan declined, but asked if he could read out a prepared statement explaining his actions and spelling out his contrition.
“I hadn’t drunk for quite some time,” he said of the incident at the New Albury Hotel on March 18.
“It was very out of character. I’m extremely remorseful and wish I could take it back.”
Mr Crompton agreed the offending appeared to be out of character for Quinlivan.
But he pointed out how assaulting police was a “very serious” offence, borne out by the maximum penalty of two years in jail.
The court was told how Quinlivan, 28, was waiting in line outside the hotel’s Beer Deluxe bar on March 18 about 10.50pm when he saw an open door, which led to the gaming area.
Quinlivan took his chance and walked inside, but he was seen by security guards who followed then told him he had to go out again and wait “like everyone else”.
He argued with the guards, who concluded he was drunk and asked him to leave.
But Quinlivan grabbed one guard’s jacket, ripping off a zipper.
They then escorted him out of the hotel.
Quinlivan was similarly abusive to police, especially when they handcuffed him, and lashed out with his legs.
He kicked one of them twice in the shins.
But Quinlivan told the court he had not deliberately tried to assault the officer and so regretted his actions.
Quinlivan was convicted and fined $1500.
