The youthful Roos defied pre-season predictions to draw level with the reigning premiers in the third term before Albury kicked the final five goals of the match to run away winners 20.10 (130) to 13.8 (86).
James Svarc (four) and Ryan Garthwaite (three) provided useful avenues to goal for Corowa-Rutherglen with Lee Schmidt well held by Luke Packer.
Mellington limped off the ground in the first quarter after a heavy collision but the left-footer returned to take his season tally to 23 goals from three matches.
He received silver service from Brayden O’Hara with Shaun Daly also turning in a dominant display for the Tigers, who were without five top-liners in Daniel Cross, Dean Polo, Michael Thompson, Setanta and Aisake O’hAilpin.
