Maksymow was given his marching orders by the Magpies after an altercation with a teammate on Saturday night.
Albury police said they had not received a complaint over the incident and no charges are expected to be laid against Maksymow, who was only released from jail in February.
“It’s very disappointing,” he said.
“We had some pretty strict guidelines in his contract around his conduct and behaviour and he digressed.
“Due to that fact, we’ve had to move him on because we’ve always got the footy club’s best interests at heart first.
“He knew that any incident was going to end this way.
“It’s a shame that it’s come to this.”
Lambert stood by the Magpies’ decision to recruit the former North Albury best and fairest winner and Ovens and Murray interleague representative, who spent time behind bars at Junee after a series of serious assaults on the Border in late 2014 and early 2015.
“We went out of our way to make sure everyone was consulted before we got him on board,” he said.
“It’s a decision we stick by.
“We wanted to give this guy another opportunity after he served his time to try and get things right.
“We were having him mentored and things seemed to be going well,
”For the six weeks he’d been training with us, he had not put a foot out of place and was really starting to win the respect of his peers and was really committed and invested in what we are doing.”
Asked how Maksymow took the news of his sacking, Lambert replied: “not well”.
“He’s very remorseful for his actions and knows what the ramifications are but we all have to live by the decisions that we make,” he said.
Lambert said the Magpies were keen to put the incident behind them and focus on Saturday’s clash against the Billabong Crows, where new facilities will be unveiled at Urana Rd Oval.
“Yes, it’s a hiccup in terms of where we are going but we had a really good performance on the weekend against a really good opposition and the excitement around our footy club is second to none,” he said.
“With our new clubrooms being opened this week and us having access to our new facilities, the excitement is amazing.
“This incident isn’t ideal but from a footy club point of view, we are really heading in the right direction.”
