Red tiles would be held overhead to form a giant ‘V’ at Albury Sports Ground, which will light up from 5.30pm.
Thurgoona Men's Shed collected four tonnes of timber, which was cut up into 4000 sheets for the event.
There will also be several barbecues for participants.
On Tuesday, the men began to paint the rectangles in the national volunteer colour, red. Albury-Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau chief executive Jemma Toohey said they were hoping for 3000 people.
“The record is for the most people making a letter,” she said.
“It is currently held in Japan at 2100 for the letter ‘M’.
“We thought we'd do a ‘V’ for volunteer and we will have a plane fly overhead to take photos.”
Men's Shed garden manager Ricky Taylor said it was an “enormous job”.
“It is a big benefit for the people who do it,” he said.
