The state government committed to spending $27.5 million on a 10-year suicide prevention framework to halve the number of suicides in Victoria over the next decade.
One initiative was a pilot for six local governments to take community approaches to suicide prevention.
Northern Victoria MLC Jaclyn Symes, born in Benalla, hopes to see the North East included in the trial.
Benalla mayor Justin King said he thought the announcement had been perfect timing and the town would be appealing to be one of the trial sites.
