A metal object was thrown through the window of the Wangaratta Chronicle building early April 12.

The device was made to look like a pipe bomb, with steel, a fake detonator and wires.

The bomb squad was brought in from Melbourne to examine the device.  

It was declared a hoax.

Detective Senior Constable Paul Campbell said police had reviewed security footage and spoken to several witnesses.

“A man has been identified as a person of interest,” he said.

“He was seen running from the Baker Street area, across Ovens Street, heading towards the car park next to the art gallery.

“At this stage we’re seeing if there is anyone else who may have seen this male.

“We suggest this person may have been involved in the throwing of this hoax bomb at the Chronicle.”

The man was seen about 5.45am, which matches the timeframe being investigated by police.

“It was a hoax, just an elaborate hoax,” Detective Senior Constable Campbell said.

“We’re looking for a shorter man with a slight build, wearing dark clothing.

“We’re spending a lot of hours trying to solve this.

“We hope people will contact us through Crime Stoppers.”

Detective Senior Constable Campbell said police had already been contacted by members of the public.

“We had a lot of information so far,” he said.

“We’re continuing to go through that.”

The bomb squad had not taken any risks with the device.

They donned protective suits to approach and attempt to defuse the item, which they had surrounded with sandbags in case of an explosion.

Several loud bangs could be heard as they attempted to detonate the device.

The building had been closed for about four hours before staff were allowed to return.
