Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic is no stranger to the biggest occasions in football – but even he knows Sunday's A-League grand final is the opportunity to "make history".

The Wanderers arrived in Adelaide on Friday and have since been followed by thousands of their most loyal fans, who have flooded the South Australian capital in a bid to see their side crowned champions for the first time.

It is a weight that bears heavily on Popovic as he goes into his fourth major final in as many years – three A-League deciders and an Asian Champions League final, with only the continental trophy in his hands thus far.

For the Wanderers to be champions, they have to do something that has only been done once in the history of the A-League: win the trophy interstate.

"I didn't really know that to be honest. But history is there to be broken and history will be broken tomorrow because us or Adelaide will win their first championship," he said at Saturday's pre-game press conference. "So that's not a concern for us. We control what we can control and we've had a good record away from home.

"We believe in our football whether it's home or away and tomorrow we're in Adelaide because Adelaide finished first and they're the premiers and deserve to have the grand final at home. But that does not mean you can't win the final.

"We're full of confidence. We go into the final [prepared] and we're used to big games. And this time we do it in front of 50,000 people in Adelaide."

When asked why he decided not to train on Adelaide Oval during the week – instead preferring to train in Sydney at the club's usual Blacktown headquarters, and then at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday [due to an AFL match at Adelaide Oval], Popovic said he didn't feel as if he was missing out.

"I just didn't want to. It wasn't part of our program. It didn't fit in. So be it," he said. "[Adelaide] haven't played a lot of football there. But they'd be more accustomed to the pitch than what we would.

"But we've played many big games in our fourth season now where we haven't trained or prepared on the actual pitch we played on. It hasn't affected us so far and we believe we'll be able to handle the pitch tomorrow."

Popovic said he had no inclination of whether the match would be a tight affair or a free-for-all, like last week's remarkable semi-final against Brisbane Roar, which the Wanderers won 5-4 in extra time.

"That's the unpredictable part of football. You don't know how the game will go and regardless of past history of results between the two teams, it won't determine what will happen tomorrow," he said. "I believe the best two teams are in the final and it'll be a great final and I'm sure both will give it their all and all that counts for us is coming out on top."

When asked if the Wanderers' decision to adopt a Spanish-inspired, ball-playing style of football this season was inspired by Adelaide's decision to follow that path in 2013, Popovic said it was just a "coincidence".

"They have fantastic players but we had a lot of success in that era as well, playing with the players that we had. We actually tried to sign a few players, back then, from Spain, but we weren't able to bring them across or weren't able to afford them at that time," he said. "We were always looking for players who can help us evolve and fit into the playing style that we want, regardless of what country they're from.

"It just happens that both clubs happen to have done very well recruiting Spanish players and coaches and there's been a big influence of that in the A-League. It's very positive for the league."

While captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley has played in all of the club's major finals, he feels this edition of the Wanderers can't be compared to previous teams given the change in personnel, philosophy and style.

"It's no secret we've gone through an evolution of playing style. We were controlling games more back then without the ball and now we try to do so both with and without the ball. And it's working," he said. "That's why we're in a final, why we have an opportunity to lift another trophy."

Cheering on the Wanderers will be the army of fans who've made the trek across from NSW, which Topor-Stanley believes will give his side a huge boost.

"There's no secret that our fans are up there with the most passionate in the league and that's why they create their own history as well," he said. "I look forward to seeing them and I expect they'll come in great numbers. I talked to them all week back in Sydney and had countless people telling me they were doing everything they could to get here, even driving.

"But that comes as no surprise because I play in front of them every week and I see they bleed for the club."

Popovic denied that his side would be fatigued despite having 48 hours less recovery time, enduring a much tougher semi-final and an interstate flight.

"For us, it doesn't really matter. Perceptions are perceptions and everyone will have their view and opinion, that's fair enough," he said.

"We've trained and played all year for this moment and you have to be prepared for your semi-final to go the distance. You have to be prepared that your final could go the distance and we're comfortable with any scenario that happens tomorrow."
