Trailing 29-0 at the break, the undermanned Blue and Golds responded to coach Raynes’ message in the second half but it wasn’t enough to register their first win of the season as they went down 29-19 to the Phantoms.
James Olds (two) and Dave Coyle were the try-scorers for the reigning premiers, who will look to carry their second-half form into Saturday’s clash with Ag College at Murrayfield.
“The forwards did their job for the full 80 minutes but we just needed to patch up our defence on their counter-attack and once we did that at half-time, we were able to manage the scoreboard a bit better,” Raynes said.
“The old dog isn’t dead yet, there’s still a bit of life in us.
“The door isn’t shut on us and we’ve got some stuff we can work with next week.
“There’s no doubt we have to start matches better.”
