The win helped Melrose take an early lead after the first round of the Melda Chater shield.
“It was a pretty even match,” Chater said.
“It was a little disappointing for us, these are the sorts of teams around us that we'd like to win games against.
“That being said, we are heading in the right direction, all is not lost.
“Javi Martinez is out for the time being and we've blooded some youngsters in Carter Love and Harry Mitchell.
“We're coming from a long way back, and we'll continue to keep having a crack at these teams.
“The plus side is that for the most part, we've been in the game as far in as the 80th minute.
“My goal coming in was to eliminate the big losses, and for the most part we've done that.”
St Pats face Diamonds next week.
