A white 4WD utility was travelling north up the main street of Wodonga about 10.20am when it collided with a smaller red vehicle.
The ute then veered onto the wrong side of the road where it hit a parked black car, pushing it into a window, and a silver vehicle.
Two other cars received minor damage before the 4WD came to a stop north of O'maille's Pub.
Clem Wallace was cleaning a window near the entrance to Lifeforce Gym when he saw a car coming towards him.
“I heard the bang and I had time to see what was happening,” he said.
“The red car was spinning and the four-wheel-drive veered into the southbound lane.
“At that stage it was coming straight towards me.
“He turned and smashed the black car up onto the curb and through the window.
“I just turned and looked through the window at my wife who was working inside.
“I turned my back and was showered with whatever flew at me.”
Police, SES, CFA and ambulance were all on scene.
The damaged vehicles were towed away while the street cleaner was brought in to clean up debris.
Southbound lanes were closed to traffic until after 12pm.
A tradesman, who was working inside 38 High Street, said he initially thought something had fallen through the floor of the gym upstairs.
The black car smashed into the window of that building, sending a large piece of glass flying 19 metres into the room.
“All I saw was that bit of glass land in front of me,” he said.
“I heard a massive bang.
“I thought someone was in the car so I ran out the front.
“Someone had been sanding around that window just 30 minutes earlier, it was very lucky.”
Wodonga Highway Patrol Sergeant Cameron Roberts said police were interviewing the driver of the utility.
“Everyone was asking how on earth it all happened,” he said.
“There were so many more things which could have gone pear shaped.
“To have no one seriously hurt, except shaken and bruised, is surprising.
“I’ve seen people die in less.”
